Layering these conventional dupattas add the necessary colour and life to any dull outfit. Most fashion enthusiasts and stylists do believe in pairing dupattas with simple outfits to make them look elegant and complete. Patan patolas are a refreshing take when it comes to tradition and style. It can also be styled very easily for any occasion.

      Heritage of Patola Dupattas

Indian textiles and customs have been a rage throughout the world. The craftsmanship, and artistry required to make these beautiful and graceful pieces is simply astounding. The Indian fabrics speak about the ancient traditions and culture of India. In spite of this, Indian fabrics, designs and patterns are underrated and unappreciated.

The heritage of patola can be dated back to 900 years, when the King Kumarpala was interested in this fabric which was considered to be luxurious and sophisticated. He was a follower of Jainism, and wanted to be clean and dressed properly every day.

He would only wear a patola to visit temples and pilgrimage. He was very particular about the type of patola he donned and the way he wore it. He would get his patola from Jalna, near Maharashtra. However, that stopped when he realised the King of Jalna would use them as bedsheets before giving them to anyone.

      The splendid weave of Patola

The weave of patolas are very precise, to an extent that the front and the back of the fabric are not distinguishable from each other. Owning a patan patola was a symbol of richness and prosperity during those times. They are a vibrant amalgamation of bright colours.

The fabric is woven using threads that are dyed in these colours in a vertical and horizontal fashion. This automatically creates various designs and patterns on the cloth. The dying of the cloth and strings are done according to the patterns that have to be achieved.

The workers tie small sections of the threads with strings so that only the exposed parts are dyed in different colours. This bundle of thread is soaked in colours so that they are dyed perfectly, after which the cotton strings were removed and the undyed parts were revealed.

Further it would be rinsed and the process would be repeated to dye all the parts to match the designs and patterns. The dyeing and wrapping of one colour takes almost a week and completing all the other colours may take up to two clear months. Hence, finishing colouring of patola dupattas in pure silk can be a very time-consuming and tedious task.
